PARADOX to .NET Real-Time Modernization for a Nationalized Bank

PARADOX to .NET: Real-Time Modernization for a Nationalized Bank

Overview

A division of one of India’s largest nationalized banks had been relying on a legacy PARADOX-based system, built decades ago. With the last PARADOX developer retired and the system incompatible with Windows 7 and beyond, continuing support was no longer viable.

Each regional office submitted end-of-day files to a central office for manual consolidation — leading to delays, inefficiencies, and data silos. The bank needed a secure, centralized, and real-time web-based platform that could evolve with growing business needs.

The Challenge

The existing PARADOX system was:

  • Obsolete and incompatible with modern operating systems
  • Decentralized, requiring daily file transfers for consolidation
  • Maintained by a retired workforce, with zero support going forward
  • Dependent on desktop-based interfaces unfamiliar to modern users

With a growing user base expected to cross 800 (non-concurrent) soon after go-live, the system needed to be scalable, maintainable, and user-friendly.

our approachPhase-Wise Modernization Plan

  1. Platform Redesign:
    • Created a secure web-based architecture to support 300 users at launch, scaling to 600 in one month, and now supporting 800+ users
    • Modularized the platform to simplify phased rollouts by region and function

  2. Incremental Rollouts:
    • Migrated 4 major modules across 6 regions through staggered go-lives
    • Enabled real-time access, eliminating manual end-of-day consolidations

  3. Technical Migration:
    • UI Migration: Desktop UI transformed into dynamic web screens
    • Database Migration: From PARADOX to SQL Server
    • Code Migration: Rewritten in .NET, enabling better maintainability and extensibility
    • Phased Data Migration: Aligned with region-wise rollouts to prevent disruption

  4. Change Management:
    • Designed for users with no prior web application experience
    • Delivered targeted re-training and onboarding programs

Learnings & Insights

01

Champion Users Accelerate Adoption

Identifying internal champions helped smoothen the transition, create trust, and reduce resistance to change.

02

Structured Training Was Crucial

Many users had never worked on web platforms before — reinforcing workflows and building digital comfort became essential.

03

Enforced Discipline Post-Migration

Real-time systems demanded stricter data and operational discipline — requiring enhanced user support in the early phases.

Impact
  • Retired legacy PARADOX system successfully

  • Launched a real-time, secure web platform

  • Scaled to 800+ users within weeks of go-live

  • Enabled live data visibility across regions, eliminating delays

  • Built a flexible foundation for future upgrades and workflow automations
